Every job starts with a phone call

Every job starts with the sale, and most sales start with a phone call. You spend real money and effort getting people to call you, through ads, reviews, your website, word of mouth. Then the phone rings at 6:40 on a Tuesday night, or while your whole crew is on a roof, and nobody picks up. That caller rarely waits. They call the next business on the list.

That's why more owners are turning to AI agents to cover missed and after-hours calls. The agent answers under your business name, gets the caller's name, number, address and problem, and sends it to you within minutes. It does it the same way on every call, including the ones that come in at 2 a.m.

One example came out last week. Jobholler launched an AI receptionist for HVAC, plumbing, electrical and roofing businesses, starting at $85 a month.

The question for this week: how many calls did you miss last month, and do you know what they were worth?

    Source: Jobholler launch

What to try: Log in to your phone system or carrier account and pull last month's missed calls. Count how many came after hours and how many came during the workday. Then call back five of them and ask whether they still need help or already hired someone. Multiply your missed-call count by your average job value and your usual close rate. That gives you a rough number for what unanswered calls may be costing you, based on your own data.

Yelp adds a $30 a month AI agent for quote requests

Yelp announced Smart Lead Reply, an AI agent that responds right after a customer sends a Request a Quote, asks about the project, and sorts out serious leads. You can load it with your scheduling link, pricing, and promos. It rolls out next month at $30 a month for categories including plumbers, roofers, electricians, home cleaners, movers, and contractors. Yelp also added direct booking for ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro users and lead syncing for Jobber and Workiz users.

What to try: If Yelp sends you quote requests, connect it to your field service software now so those leads land in your job list, then decide whether $30 a month beats how fast you answer them today.

Roofr launches an AI receptionist built for roofing calls

Roofr, a CRM used by roofing contractors, launched an AI Receptionist that qualifies leads, books appointments, and routes urgent calls, instead of just taking a message. Roofr also added unlimited user seats for subscribers, Spanish translation, payment schedules, and updates to its estimating and proposal tools.

What to try: Before you buy any AI phone answering service, call it yourself as a customer with a leaking roof or a no heat call and check whether it books the job or just takes a note.

More homeowners would check HVAC reviews through AI tools than on Facebook

An ACHR News survey of 782 homeowners and 205 contractors found 37% of homeowners would look up HVAC contractor reviews through AI tools, ahead of Facebook at 35% and close to Yelp at 38%. Google Business was still first at 54%. Homeowners' top worry was losing human judgment (36%), and half the contractors said they don't use AI yet. The survey was fielded April 24 to May 19, 2026 and published October 20.

What to try: Ask an AI tool what it knows about your business, then make sure your Google Business Profile and website list your services, service area, and recent reviews, since those are what these tools read.

Owners who hand AI real jobs get more time back

A Network Solutions survey of 187 U.S. small business owners who use AI found 60% say it saves them at least two hours a week. Fewer than half used it for customer service (47%) or bookkeeping and invoicing (43%), but those who did were among the most likely to report big time savings. While 31% said they had used an AI agent, only 32% could describe what one does. The margin of error is about 7 points.

What to try: Pick one job you still do by hand every week, like invoice reminders or answering common customer questions, and try handing that single job to an AI tool for a month.
